During the depths of the Great Depression in 1933, two visionary contributors decided forever to change the course of Newaygo County’s history, leading to the founding of the Fremont Area Community Foundation. A donation of $5,700 from the Harry Williams estate was used to establish a fund aimed at promoting the general well-being of Newaygo County. Jacob Andrew Gerber left a $31,000 legacy to support charitable causes that year. Their acts of generosity were timeless and fitting in a time of need.
Recalling the 1944 contributions made by Mattie Gerber, the widow of Jacob Andrew, to her husband’s fund, well-known local attorney William J. Branstrom merged the funds from Harry Williams and the Gerbers with his own. Branstrom is renowned for his commitment to the community and philanthropic donations. With these funds, Frank Gerber, Horace Loomis, Dick Pikaart, Herman Schuiteman, and Branstrom founded the private Fremont organization in 1951.
