Yale University’s International Fellowships 2024–2025 for Masters and PhD Students

Through scholarship and community service, the Yale Fellowship seeks to strengthen “mutual understanding” between the U.S. and the nations where our partner universities are located to spark fruitful discussions about difficult problems, provide timely and viable solutions, and more.

Since its inception at the end of the Cold War, the focus has been on conflict and peace in general, as well as the U.S.-Soviet interaction, has grown to encompass a variety of challenges facing every region of the world in the twenty-first century, including resource stewardship, development, prosperity, and human rights.

Yale International Fellowships look for candidates whose work has the potential to provide workable answers to issues that obstruct global peace and development. Critical areas of Study for the Fellowship include public health, environmental policy, business and finance, management, economics, political science, social sciences, law, international relations and global affairs, and modern history.

About the Fellowship

A graduate student exchange program called the Yale International Fellowships connects Yale with 19 esteemed partner universities across the globe. Yale International Fellows are chosen based on their capacity to lead in domains important to policy, historically informed, and socially impactful.

The twenty-first century’s interdisciplinary and international nature of knowledge and practice increasingly influences this kind of activity. The research initiatives and scholarly pursuits of yale International Fellowships mirror the fields of interest and concern for many of the world’s foremost policymakers and those that promise to spark new discussions.

You should have a robust and focused research project with an emphasis on business and finance, public health, political science, law, economics, environmental policy, social sciences, international relations and global affairs, and contemporary history. Preferably, it would help if you chose topics with contemporary institutional relevance.

Take note: If the candidate’s project focuses on one or more of these topics, their total program of studies or degree may originate from several departments and disciplines.

Provide evidence of your strong language abilities, including your TOEFL and IELTS results, demonstrating your ability to read, write, and converse in English.

Application Deadline

Each yale partner university will announce the exact dates for the application deadlines, which occur in January and February of each year.

Fellowship Eligibility

  • Graduate students seeking master’s or doctoral degrees, as well as students graduating from master’s programs, are qualified. Graduate students are favored; however, exceptional merit and distinction from bachelor’s degree graduates may be considered. Postdoctoral candidates and international students proposing research in their home countries are not eligible for the Yale Fellowship.
  • Personal qualities: The applicant must be dedicated to rigorous Study, able to take on leadership roles, and actively participate in the community at large. The applicant has shown a strong understanding of and dedication to serving as a “citizen ambassador.”
  • Strength of academic achievement: The candidate must show that they are highly capable of conducting research on the topic on which they intend to do their yale Fellowship project and have excelled in all pertinent coursework.
  • Focus areas: International relations and global affairs, environmental policy, public health, business and finance, social sciences, economics, political science, law, and contemporary history are intense areas of concentration for a robust and focused research project. Current, institutional, applied, and applied relevance topics to promote global peace and prosperity are preferred. If the candidate’s project focuses on one or more of these topics, their total program of studies or degree may originate from several departments and disciplines.
  • Language proficiency: The candidate’s language proficiency must be adequate for them to complete their research project successfully and interact with fellow Yale International Fellowship recipients at Yale and the academic and social communities of the host university. Yale Fellowship candidates at Yale University must provide recent TOEFL or IELTS results that show they are proficient in reading, writing, and conversational English. Only applicants from partner universities where English is the predominant teaching language are exempt from this criterion.

Selection Criteria

The following criteria are used by the Yale yale Fellowship selection committee to reach its final decision:

  • Character and proven leadership potential
  • Strength of academic success
  • Research proposal quality
  • Personal commitment to being a “citizen ambassador”

Number of Recipients

Each year, one student from each Yale exchange partner moves in with Yale, and at least one Yale student visits each partner.

Worth of Fellowship

Every Fellowship from Yale International A similar grant is given to fellows at Yale, matching the amount of funding doctorate students in the graduate school receive. The Yale Fellowship offers rental housing accommodations, round-trip airfare, and a sizable living stipend to cover living expenses not covered by any money you may have available. The Fellowship will also cover health insurance. Additionally, all fellows can apply for grants from a $2000 U.S.D. research travel fund. Fellowship period: ten months

Coverage of Fellowship

  • A scholarship to Yale University is given to cover all of the family’s proven financial need.
  • To calculate the amount of your scholarship, they consider your parent’s income, assets, and financial situation.
  • The annual amount of a Yale grant can range from a few hundred dollars to over $70,000; the average need-based grant awarded by Yale is more than $50,000.
  • Additionally, tuition is free for students whose parents make less than $65,000 annually! Thus, the Yale University scholarship covers tuition, lodging, and board if your parents make less than $65,000 annually!

Fellowship Benefits

  1. All Yale Fellows receive the same funding, comparable to that of graduate students pursuing doctorates. The Yale Fellowship offers rental housing accommodations, round-trip airfare, and a sizable living stipend to cover living expenses not covered by any money you may have available.
  2. The Fellowship will also cover health insurance. Additionally, all fellows can apply for grants from a $2000 U.S.D. research travel fund.  Fellows can apply to the research travel fund to reimburse their lodging and transportation expenses for academic activities they conduct in the exchange partner’s region.
  3. Although you cannot use the research travel grant to conduct studies in your country, you could seek funding to hold significant conferences there. Please be aware that the research travel money does not cover food and clothes and that the Fellows must present their work to be eligible for conference funding.
  4. Yale will assist you in supporting your spouse’s and children’s visa applications; however, Yale cannot pay for their living, travel, or medical costs. You may need to provide evidence that you can provide for them while visiting the exchange partner. Yale will sponsor your J-1 Visa and J-2 dependent visas for children and spouses.

Application Process

The typical application material includes an  application form, TOEFL/EILTS scores (if applicable), and two letters of recommendation. Details of schedule, format, specific information and documentation may vary with each Fox exchange partner university. Each Yale partner campus hosts an annual open competition to choose and nominate its finest students to be Yale Fellows.

The Yale Fellowship selection committee uses the following criteria to reach its final decision:

  • The study proposal’s quality
  • The degree of academic success
  • Moral fiber and proven capacity for leadership
  • Exhibited a sincere desire to serve as a “citizen ambassador.”

Every year, in January or February, applications must be submitted. Each yale partner university will provide the exact dates. By mid-April, Yale students selected as Yale Fellows will be informed. The ten-month Fellowship runs from late August to early September every year.
